Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV – What Exactly Is That?

Have you ever rolled over in bed and that simple movement gave you the spins?

Does looking up, tilting your head, or looking down make you nauseous?

If are experiencing these symptoms and they only last just a short time, like 30 seconds, you may have Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

One study has shown, almost 40% of patients with age exceeding 70 years received a diagnosis of BPPV.

Another study found the prevalence of unrecognized BPPV within the geriatric population is high. This study uncovered, that individuals with undiagnosed BPPV were characterized by depression, may have experienced a fall during the previous three months, and reduced activities of daily living (household chores).

BPPV, in short, means that vertigo or spinning sensation is not harmful, lasts a short while, and is position-dependent.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV is a disorder caused by problems in the inner ear. Its symptoms include positional vertigo or spinning sensation caused by changes in the position of your head.

BPPV usually only lasts seconds or minutes, and may also make you feel like you are going to vomit. It can also be a symptom of recent head trauma or injury, like falling or being in a car accident.

What can you do about it? You can do nothing and see if the symptoms go away.  You can wait to have your physician see you.
